Camas-Washougal Rotary Club continued their tradition to give a personal dictionary to each third grade student throughout both communities this week.
Rotarian’s Nan Henriksen and Joyce Lindsay were on hand Monday, November 14 at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary to present the books to eager students. Each dictionary has a book plate on the inside cover featuring the Rotary logo, the organization’s 4-Way Test and a place for the student to write their name.
Henriksen explained the Rotarian’s 4-Way Test, suggesting to students that they work to uphold the truth, strive to be fair, endeavor to build good will in their community and seek to benefit the greater good with their actions.
To demonstrate the power of words, Lindsay asked the group to give examples of words that make students feel happy and sad and words that have a positive effect on others. “This is a book of powerful words that will be at your disposal for the rest of your life,” she explained.
“Getting a dictionary of my own is very cool,” said third grader Olivia Chambers from Ms. Stauffer’s class. “I am excited to see what is inside and learn more words.”
