A group of Skamania County area women set out to demonstrate to Cape Horn-Skye Elementary students that they are loved with the sweet surprise gift of homemade cookies.
“There are so many bad things happening out there,” said Mary Ellen Grode. “The kids hear about shootings, bombings, bullies and we just wanted to show them that they are loved and that people in the world still do care and do nice things.“
Grode lead the baking effort by a group of seven friends who know each other through church and exercise class. Grode, Andi Crockford and Linda Syrylo had the fun of serving the 4th and 5th grade students at CH-S on Thursday, December 10.
According to Grode, as the women demonstrated the old fashioned value of sharing with the students, they felt the students projected back the old fashioned values of politeness and gratitude. “All the kids were so polite,” she remarked. “There were a lot of ‘pleases,’ ‘may I,’ and ‘thank yous.’ No one pushed or took more than one. Everyone waited in line and were so happy to receive the cookie.”
“There is a lot of unrest in our world, and to have these ladies show their support of our students in this way is simply wonderful,” said Mary Lou Woody, CH-S Principal. “I love, love, love our school and community!”
