The SW Washington Gap Foundation works to fill the food gap for youth at times when school meals are not available. Prior to Thanksgiving, winter break, and spring break, reusable grocery bags filled with food are delivered to Hathaway Elementary by volunteers. The SW WA Gap Foundation also supplies staples for the food pantry at the WSD Family Community Resource Center located there.
Students who receive the food bags are participants in the Friday Backpack Program. There are currently 103 students served by this important program and receive this extra assistance to help them through the long school breaks.

Washougal School District Family Resource Coordinators Nancy Boon and Penny Porche work with SW WA Gap Foundation to identify families and facilitate food bag pickup. “We just want to thank the amazing volunteers that include Devin Miller, Cindy Friesen, and Carrie Rohrer who work so hard for our community,” said Boon.
“The Foundation has helped feed our youth for many years,” said Porche. “We appreciate how well they’ve been able to match our numbers as need grew after the pandemic.”
